Recently I have had quite a number of people email me asking about the authenticity of fat loss supplements (fat burners) so I thought I should write about it. So this is one of those questions that you cannot just answer with a straight YES/NO because people will always want to know the why behind the answer.
To answer the question, I will say YES they do work and please before you crucify me please hear me out. But before I can tell you the why or the how, I am guessing by now we all know that to lose weight you must be in a caloric deficit and if you do not know, this means the energy you take into your body in terms of food (calories in) should be less than the energy you expend (calories out). And therefore anything that helps to put in a calorific deficit directly or indirectly will help you lose weight. Before you stop reading you should know that as the name suggests, these are supplements and it essentially means they aid/help you lose weight and that means there is a major action you should primarily be undertaking to lose weight and then the fat burner comes into play to help you speed up the process. So what I am trying to say is that these supplements work like catalysts and if you took a few chemistry classes then you know they speed up reactions which are already taking place, I hope you get the picture and that said you should then stick to exercising and dieting to maintain the caloric deficit for this to work.
How do they work? There are several mechanisms through which these supplements work and I will mention a few below.
>Energizers: The fat burners always contain substances that will give you more energy and this helps by increasing your performance while working out, so you burn more calories because you work more. But now imagine you just take one that works like this and you just sit and do nothing. Of course you will get zero results.
>Appetite suppressors; Low appetite simply means low food intake hence caloric deficiency and that will help you lose weight. This will only go to waste if you choose the worst food whenever you get the appetite, that is the reason why some people hardly eat but are still fat.
There are several others like helping you sleep longer and so you tend to eat less since those late night cravings are gone with early sleeping, some generate more heat by increasing the adrenaline hormone release (thermogenesis) and this increases your resting energy expenditure. All in all, they somehow find a way to help you to a caloric deficit directly or indirectly.
